In 1997, a strapping young lad named Jerry was out fishing. As he sat there, bored and lost in thought, he got an idea… “I wanna take my dad fishin’ for his birthday!” He got so excited that he called up his brother Jak, and Jake said, “Jerry, what a great idea, I’m in!” So he planned it. They decided it wouldn’t be a real “Father/son” fishing trip without their own sons, so they each took a son along. Now, they didn’t want it to be a weekend full of responsibility and work, so they set just a couple of guidelines. “We won’t bring anyone along under 18. That way each man is responsible for themselves. We don’t want a weekend where Dad or us have to babysit.”
Also, NO WOMEN are allowed… This is a guys trip!
So five brave men ascended the mountains of Colorado and trekked to the Lower Blue River Valley and Green Mountain Reservoir. Little did they know, they were about to establish something great. Something that truly leaves a legacy passed from generation to generation. It would become a rite of passage for all Stoneberger young men.
Throughout the weekend the gears in all five brilliant Stoneberger minds started a turnin’ and before you knew it they had all kinds of ideas. They decided this couldn’t end after one weekend, they had to make it an annual event! Over the course of the weekend and the weeks to follow, they met, talked, planned, they each came up with ideas that would make SMART what it is today. They got as many of their other Stoneberger relatives involved as they could. The weekend quickly grew from those brave five to as many as 25. Today the SMART weekend is as strong as it has ever been. It is an annual event looked forward to by many. In honor of Stony’s Birthday, is still held on the final full weekend of June every year.
